Booking Your G2 Road Test in the GTA: What to Know First

May 27, 2026 · 6 min read

Booking your G2 road test is the moment your learner journey starts to feel real. It's the test that takes you from a G1 learner's permit to a G2 — the licence that finally lets you drive on your own. But before you log in and grab the first available slot, there are a few things worth getting right. Booking too early means you're not eligible; booking the wrong centre means an unfamiliar route; booking late means waiting months. This guide walks you through what to know first, specifically for new drivers in the GTA.

First, are you actually eligible?

The G2 road test isn't something you can take the week after you pass your G1 knowledge test. Ontario's graduated licensing system requires you to gain real time behind the wheel first. There are two possible waiting periods:

  • You must hold your G1 for 12 months before you're eligible for the G2 road test — that's the standard path.
  • Or just 8 months if you complete an approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course. Completing BDE shaves four full months off your wait.

So the very first thing to check is your eligibility date. Look at when your G1 was issued, add 12 months (or 8 if you've finished BDE), and that's the earliest you can sit the test. The DriveTest system will generally enforce this, but it saves frustration to know your date before you start booking. At Colors Drivers, our full course is $769 plus HST and puts you on the faster 8-month track while teaching you the rules properly — because we teach the rules of driving, not just driving.

How to book your test

In Ontario, road tests are run by DriveTest, not by us or any driving school. You have three ways to book:

  • Online at DriveTest.ca — the fastest option, available any time. You'll log in, choose the G2 test, and pick a centre and time slot.
  • By phone, through the DriveTest line at 1-888-570-6110, if you'd rather book with a person or have questions.
  • In person at a DriveTest centre, if you happen to be passing through one.

Whichever method you choose, you'll select a DriveTest centre in or near the GTA for your appointment. Here's the single most important tip in this whole article: book early. Popular GTA centres fill their G2 slots weeks — sometimes a couple of months — in advance. If you wait until you feel "ready" to book, you may end up waiting far longer than you'd like for an actual appointment. Reserve a slot ahead of your target date; you can usually reschedule if your plans shift.

What to bring on test day

Showing up prepared keeps the day calm. Make sure you have:

  • Your valid G1 licence — the actual card, not a photo of it.
  • A roadworthy, insured and plated vehicle for the test, with working signals, brake lights, horn, and seatbelts. The examiner can refuse a car that isn't safe. If you don't have a suitable car, you can use ours — the same instructor vehicle you trained in.
  • Plenty of time. Arrive early — at least 30 minutes before your appointment — so you can check in, settle your nerves, and aren't rushed. Late arrivals can lose their slot.

Choosing the right test centre

Not all DriveTest centres are equal for a nervous new driver. Busy urban centres in the heart of the GTA tend to have heavier traffic, more complex intersections, and tighter timing on their test routes. Quieter centres a little further out can feel less intimidating. Neither is "easier" in terms of passing standards — the marking is the same everywhere — but the driving environment differs.

The smartest preparation isn't finding an "easy" centre — it's training on the routes you'll actually be tested on, so nothing on test day is a surprise.

Whichever centre you choose, the goal is the same: practise in that area beforehand. Familiar roundabouts, lane patterns, and parking situations turn a stressful exam into a routine drive. This is one reason our students walk in confident.

Use our car and a pre-test refresher

Two things make a real difference on test day, and we offer both. First, you can use our instructor car for the test — the exact vehicle you've been training in, so the mirrors, pedals, and dimensions are already second nature. Second, we offer a pre-test refresher: a focused session right before your appointment to settle nerves, review the manoeuvres examiners look for, and run the kind of route you'll face. You can see how these fit together on our services page and across our course options, from the full BDE down to shorter refresher tracks.

Common mistakes when booking the test

  • Booking before you're eligible — double-check your 8- or 12-month date first.
  • Leaving it too late — GTA slots fill up, so reserve early.
  • Picking a centre you've never driven near — unfamiliar routes add avoidable stress.
  • Bringing an unsafe or uninsured car — the examiner can cancel the test on the spot.
  • Arriving with no buffer time — rushing in flustered rarely ends well.

After you pass

Pass your G2 road test and you'll receive your G2 licence — you can now drive on your own, day and night, including on highways. It's a genuine milestone. Just remember the journey isn't over: the final G test, which involves highway driving, is a separate exam you book later. You must hold your G2 for a minimum of 12 months before you're eligible for it. We're happy to help you prepare for that highway test when the time comes — just ask, or check our FAQ for more detail.

A quick but important note: fees, wait times, and the exact booking steps can change. Always confirm the current requirements and availability directly at DriveTest.ca before you book — it's the official source. We serve the GTA and Niagara region, and we teach in English, Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu, so you can prepare in the language you think in.
